Savannah
and the Golden Isles

March 2009

Savannah is truly an unique city, famous for its "pocket parks" and squares laid out by founder, General James Oglethorpe in the early 1700s. The buildings that front the squares are a feast to the eyes for architecture and history buffs-Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Regency, Georgian and Federal. As for Georgia's nearby Golden Isles... the flags of five nations have flown over these islands and the remains of an English fort, plantation ruins and Victorian homes represent their diverse history.

Tentative Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Savannah.
Welcome to Savannah. Once at the hotel relax and or take a stroll around the area. The WTT tour leader will have suggestions for your free time before we meet as a group and have dinner together.

Day 2: Full Day to explore Savannah
Today experience Savannah's rich history via a city tour that will help you understand the significance of the city's architecture layout, introduce you to the city's famous (and infamous) characters, and pass by beautiful homes dating back to before the Civil War. After the city tour the rest of the day is yours to explore the town. Your tour leader will have suggestions for how to best use the remainder of your day.

Day 3: The Golden Isles
Today we set off for St. Simon Island and Jekyll Island. Here we will see many lovely summer homes that have been restored to their original beauty. These summer cottages were the vacation homes of many early aristocrats. While on Jekyll Island we'll have lunch at the lovely Jekyll Island Hunt Club. What a perfect way to spend the day! We'll return to Savannah late in the day.

Day 4: Return home.
You have as much of today as you would like to enjoy more of what Savannah has to offer. Sleep in late or take a stroll along the river before departing for the airport at your convenience.
