Monday, December 8:  Nuremberg

Step back in history through medieval gateways.  The second largest city in Bavaria, Nuremberg is filled with Gothic churches and traditional half-timbered houses. Although nearly destroyed during World War II, the remaining medieval city walls still feature some of the watchtowers and gateways.  Nuremberg was well known historically for its metal and toy craftsmanship, and the city is infamous for its role in WWII.

Your tour begins with a motorcoach ride to see Zeppelin Field and the Palace of Justice, site of the historic Nuremberg Trials. Arrive at the walled section of downtown where you walk up to the grounds of the Imperial Castle for amazing views of the city below.  Then, descend into the Old Town, pass the Albrecht Durer House and the Main Market Square. You can stay in the city to enjoy free time or visit the city’s world-famous Christmas market (Christkindlmarkt). (B,L,D)

Tuesday, December 9:  Regensburg

Be enchanted by this “picture-postcard” riverside town.  Having escaped major damage during World War II, the picturesque town of Regensburg is one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval cities and the oldest city along the Danube. Founded by Marcus Aurelius over 2,000 years ago, Regensburg has many architectural highlights including Old Stone Bridge, constructed in the 12th century, and St. Peter’s Cathedral with its Romanesque tower inside a newer Gothic one.

Cruise to medieval Regensburg with history dating back more than 2,000 years to it's founding by Marcus Aurelius. Take a walking tour through this well-preserved city and explore its historic splendor. You see the Old Town, St. Peter’s Cathedral and the 12th century Old Stone Bridge.  Eat lunch aboard or take free time to visit Germany’s oldest restaurant, the 800-year-old Alte Wurstkuche (Old Sausage Kitchen). You have free time to visit the Christmas market or explore the city further.  (B,L,D)

Wednesday, December 10:  Passau

Hear soaring music from Europe’s largest pipe organ.  Set at the confluence of the Inn, Ilz and Danube Rivers, enchanting Passau is home to elegant colored buildings and graceful arcades. Founded by the Celts more than 2,000 years ago, it’s one of Bavaria’s oldest cities. Passau’s baroque St. Stephan’s Cathedral houses Europe’s largest pipe organ with more than 17,000 pipes.

Cruise the scenic Danube and enjoy its quiet winter landscape and quaint riverside towns to beautiful Passau, set at the confluence of the Inn, Ilz and Danube Rivers. Take a walking tour along narrow cobblestone streets and through graceful arcades to visit St. Stephan’s Cathedral.  Enjoy afternoon free time to explore the Christmas market or stores. (B,L,D)

Thursday, December 11:  Linz

Discover the Austrian charms of Linz.  Linz was originally Lentia, a Roman castle-settlement of the first century A.D. Today, Linz’s art, history and architecture make it an inspiring city to visit and a leading cultural center of Austria.

A walking tour in Linz takes you past the city’s baroque facades to the Hauptplatz. Continue through the medieval town and old market.  From here, tour inside the cathedral and stroll other squares and markets before returning to your ship for lunch. Your afternoon is free to explore Linz’s stores or Christmas market.  (B,L,D)

Friday, December 12:  Melk

Tour this town’s baroque masterpiece.  Set amidst an important wine-growing region with picturesque villages and hilltop castles, the charming city of Melk lies at the confluence of the Danube and Melk Rivers at the base of the Wachau Valley. An imposing 900-year-old Benedictine abbey, a stunning example of baroque architecture, overlooks the town from its dramatic hilltop location. This architectural treasure has 365 windows, one for each day of the year. Its beautiful library houses medieval manuscripts and marvelous frescoes by Paul Troger, and its meticulously kept grounds are inviting and picturesque.

Take a coach to the top of the hill where the abbey overlooks the river. Tour this 900-year-old Benedictine abbey and see its baroque splendor inside and out. A highlight of the lavish interior is its spectacular library, filled with two stories of medieval manuscripts and vibrant ceiling frescoes by Paul Troger. (B,L,D)

Saturday, December 13:  Vienna

Explore the city that inspired fine art & classical music.  This capital city of Austria is filled with green parks, elegant stores, theaters and gracious boulevards. Known as the “City of Waltzes,” Vienna is considered the center of classical music, and here Strauss, Beethoven and Mozart composed many of their finest pieces. Be sure to stop in one of the city’s famous cafes to taste the delectable Sacher Torte. Noted landmarks include the impressive Hofsburg Palace, Vienna Opera House and lavish Schönbrunn Palace, the preferred residence of the Hapsburgs.

Embark on a city tour to visit this “City of Waltzes,” where Mozart and Strauss composed many of their finest works. A motorcoach takes you along the Ringstrasse and you see the Opera House and beautiful Hofburg Palace. You then stop at St. Stephan’s Cathedral and enjoy a walking tour along Stephansplatz followed by free time. Return to your ship for lunch, but take the afternoon to shop along the Kartnerstrasse, visit the city’s Christmas market or people-watch at a quaint cafe.  (B,L,D)
