Charleston, SC & Savannah, GA

March 21 - 26, 2010

Charleston, South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia represent the quintessential idea of "southern-ness."  While only 2 hours apart, these towns are very different. While Savannah is laid out in squares and sits on a river, Charleston occupies the tip of a peninsula, bounded on two sides by rivers that flow into the Charleston Harbor and to the Atlantic Ocean.

We will use our time to explore these two lovely southern towns with two nights in each city. You will have plenty of time to explore and enjoy the southern charm these places are so famous for. As a bonus, enjoy the beautiful flowers that will be in bloom.  Come join us for a delightful Slice of the South!

Just a note to say thanks so much for organizing such a wonderful and memorable trip. I really enjoyed it and look forward to taking another WTT trip in the future.

Lodging (3 nights): Kings Courtyard Inn - (www.kingscourtyardinn.com) Built in 1854, Kings Courtyard Inn is one of the most historic Charleston Bed and Breakfast Inns. Architect Francis D. Lee designed the three-story antebellum structure in the Greek revival style with unusual Egyptian detail.
Kings Courtyard Inn is located at 198 King Street, in the heart of Charleston's historic district. Each of the rooms has an individual distinction. All rooms feature oversized beds, some with canopied beds and fireplaces, and many have an excellent view of one of the inner courtyards.

Monday, 22 March: Morning City Tour; Magnolia Plantation house and grounds tour.

Our day will begin with a city tour of Charleston to get acquainted with our surroundings and to learn what the city has to offer, followed by a visit to Magnolia Plantation.

Founded in 1676 by the Drayton family, Magnolia Plantation has survived the centuries and witnessed the history of our nation unfold before it from the American Revolution through the Civil War and beyond. It is the oldest public tourist site in the Lowcountry, and the oldest public gardens in America, opening its doors to visitors in 1872 to view the thousands of beautiful flowers and plants in its famous gardens.

Upon returning from Magnolia Plantation, the remainder of the afternoon and evening are yours to enjoy as you wish. (B)

Tuesday, 23 March: Day to Explore Charleston

This day is yours to explore the charm of Charleston. Your tour leader will have all sorts of suggestions of things to do. Some ideas for the day include visiting the old city market and watch the women weave baskets, take a tour of the harbor by boat and visit Fort Sumter where the first shots of the Civil War were exchanged, or tour through homes and gardens in Charleston’s historic district. We will have dinner together this evening. (B,D)

Wednesday, 24 March: Morning departure via Beaufort, SC to Savannah and dinner

We will leave the city of Charleston today and stop on our way to Savannah in the lovely town of Beaufort, South Carolina. Beaufort delights its visitors with its breathtakingly beautiful natural vistas and impressive architecture from the Colonial and Antebellum Eras. Beaufort remains the Queen of the South Carolina Sea Islands in its charm, natural beauty, fascinating history, and rich and diverse cultural heritage. Enjoy a walking tour of Beaufort and time for lunch before continuing on to Savannah.

Arriving in Savannah around 3:00pm we will check into the hotel. Dinner is on your own this evening. (B)

Lodging (2 nights): The Marshall House (www.marshallhouse.com) - In 1851, The Marshall House was built as the first hotel in Savannah.
The Marshall House was named as a National Historic building on April 1, 2000 by The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. The hotel has its original staircases (some of the spindles and gingerbread have been recreated), original wood floors, fireplaces, brick walls and the doors to each guest room. The Atrium was the courtyard and has been encased with a glass ceiling to give the sensation of what once was. The artifacts displayed on floors two and three were found during a recent renovation.

Thursday, 25 March: City Tour, Free time and Group Dinner

We begin today with a city tour to understand the significance of Savannah and to take in its beauty. Afterwards enjoy time to explore Savannah. Your tour leader will have plenty of suggestions for you. This evening we will re-gather as a group and have dinner together to reminisce about our favorite things on the trip. (B, D)
