Vancouver to Banff
British Columbia, Canada

July 20 - 26, 2008

The last time we offered this trip was in 2003 - how time flies! In 2008, we will begin at the sea, and end in the mountains. Our starting point is Vancouver where we will spend 2 days exploring this beautiful city that is tucked in between the mountains and the sea. Famous for its stunning beauty, large urban forests, easy access to the mountains, boutique shops and fine food, Vancouver will steal your heart. But that's just the beginning of this fabulous trip. From Vancouver we board the Rocky Mountaineer train and travel across the mountains to our ultimate destination of Banff. Nestled in a valley surrounded by mountains, Banff is a charming town with much to offer in natural beauty. Using Banff as our base, we will explore the surrounding area including a trip to Lake Louise and a day at the Columbia Ice fields. If stunning natural beauty is your thing, then this is the trip for you!

Monday, July 21:  Vancouver City Tour

What better way to start the day than a 3-hour tour of Vancouver, British Columbia’s largest city and the major port for all of western Canada. It is surrounded almost completely by water, with snowcapped mountains rising vertically in the background.  Stanley Park is recognized as one of the great parks of the world.  It is an evergreen oasis of 1,000 acres that abounds in wildlife, gardens and majestic cedar, hemlock and fir trees.  The Vancouver Aquarium is one of the most popular attractions in the Park.  Historic Gastown will take you back to cobble-stoned streets, mews, courtyards, and Victorian architecture set against a backdrop of mountains.

After the tour the afternoon is yours. Stop for dim-sum in one of the many restaurants in Chinatown or visit Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden, an exquisite reproduction of a Ming Dynasty landscape or do exactly what you want with an afternoon and evening free for exploring.   (B)

Tuesday, July 22:  Rocky Mountaineer Train Vancouver to Kamloops

Travel onboard the Rocky Mountaineer Red Leaf Service from the coastal city of Vancouver to Kamloops in the heart of British Columbia’s interior. On today’s journey you will see dramatic changes in scenery, from the lush green fields of the Fraser River Valley, through forests and winding river canyons surrounded by the peaks of the Coast and Cascade Mountains, to the desert-like environment of the interior. Highlights include the rushing waters of Hell’s Gate in the Fraser Canyon and the steep slopes and rock sheds along the Thompson River. Our day concludes as the Rocky Mountaineer travels along the shores of Kamloops Lake and into Kamloops where we will spend the night. (B,L,D)

Wednesday, July 23:  Rocky Mountaineer Train Kamloops to Banff

Our journey continues eastwards to the mighty Canadian Rockies and the province of Alberta. Once again you will see a spectacular range of scenery as you travel across ranchlands, along rocky lakeshores, over high mountain passes and through the remarkable tunnels that form part of the rich rail history of the Canadian Rockies. Today’s highlights include Craigellachie where the last spike of the Canadian Pacific Railway was driven, the climb over Rogers Pass, the Kicking Horse Canyon, the Spiral Tunnels, and of course the glaciers and snow-capped peaks of the Canadian Rockies. The   journey concludes in the resort town of Banff where we will spend the next two days.  (B,L,D)

Thursday, July 24:  Banff City Tour, Afternoon free

The town of Banff is actually located inside Banff National Park that covers 2564 square miles with its roaring waterfalls and ice-blue glaciers, meadows full of wildflowers and breathtaking panoramic vistas.  The origins of Canada’s first national park go back to 1883, when railway builders came across the hot springs.  Among the many highlights are the hoodoos - an incredible sandstone formation that has been shaped by centuries of wind, Surprise Corner, and Tunnel Mountain Drive for outstanding views of the Bow River Valley.  One of the most recognized sights in Canada is the Banff Springs Hotel.  After a morning city tour, there will be time to explore Banff on your own.   (B)

Friday, July 25:  Lake Louise and Columbia Ice Fields; Farewell Dinner

Today is a full day of outdoor adventures.  We will travel the Bow Valley Parkway stopping at Johnston Canyon for a view of Castle Mountain.  Mt. Victoria and the Victoria Glacier provide a perfect backdrop for the blue-green waters of Lake Louise, known as the "Jewel of the Rockies". Renowned as one of the most scenic drives in the Rockies, the Icefields Parkway leads us past natural beauty and abundant wildlife enroute to the Columbia Icefields.  One of the largest accumulations of ice south of the Arctic Circle, it is also one of the most accessible. Spectacular scenery is everywhere including Crowfoot Glacier, Peyto and Bow Lakes.  An experience of a lifetime awaits at the Columbia Icefield. Upon arrival at the Icefield Centre, shuttle to the Athabasca Glacier where we will board a unique, specially designed Ice Explorer for a guided tour onto the surface of the Glacier - a true Ice Age adventure.  We will end our day in Calgary where we will have dinner together. (B,L,D)

Saturday, July 26:  Return Home

Depart Calgary (Airport code YYC) at your convenience. Since we are literally in the airport, you need only walk to your gate. (No matter when your flight departs you need to allow 2 to 2 1/2 hours for US security and customs at the Calgary Airport.)
