Prague, Vienna &
Budapest

May 28 - June 6, 2008

Three lovely cities-one incredible trip! Join us as we explore the best of old Europe-the architecture, the art, the scenery, the food and the people. Here time seems to be suspended in a state of refinement and stately elegance. As you walk through the streets and look at the land that has been worked and tended for centuries, you become a part of what has gone before. In Prague, the hundred-spired city, we will see the city, visit Prague Castle Area with St. Vitus Cathedral and Royal Place, the Lesser Quarter (an area with ornate 17th and 18th century mansions) and the Jewish Quarter. In Vienna enjoy a visit to the Museums Quarter, see the Lippizanner horses and sample a Viennese Sachertorte.  In Budapest see the Inner City and Central Pest, the neo-Gothic Parliament building and Chain Bridge, which connects Buda, Obuda, and Pest into one city.

Thursday, 29 May: Prague City Tour, Afternoon Free

Much of Prague's architectural beauty was achieved during its 14th-century glory days under Charles IV.  One of the most beautiful architectural sights is Prague Castle with the Gothic St. Vitus Cathedral visible in the background.  From this hilltop location you can see breathtaking views of the city, the river and the Gothic-style Charles Bridge.

Today's city tour includes a visit to the Royal Castle, former residence of the Bohemian kings, St Vitus Cathedral, the most important church in the Czech Republic, St. George's Basilica, Golden Lane, and the Strahov monastery.  After the tour you have the afternoon and evening free.   Prague has many museums and galleries to visit providing a rich artistic heritage of Prague and the Czech lands. The numerous expositions of the National Gallery, Municipal Gallery, National Museum, and other institutions contain extensive collections of art of all styles and eras.  You might want to shop for Czech products including crystal, hand painted eggs, handicrafts, folk art, puppets, and wooden toys. Friday, 30 May: Walking tour of Old Town Prague and Jewish Quarter, Afternoon Free

We begin today with a walking tour of the Old Town Square, the very heart of Prague.  Here you will find well-preserved historic buildings, large sidewalk cafes, churches and the Old Town Hall with its 600-year old Astronomical Clock and its hourly procession of apostles and allegorical figures.

Our walk continues to the Jewish Quarter.  While most of it was torn down at the end of the 1800s, some buildings do remain.  We will see the Jewish Museum, the Old Cemetery (Europe's oldest surviving Jewish cemetery) and the Old-New Synagogue.  Built around 1270, it is the oldest in-use synagogue in Europe and one of Prague's earliest Gothic buildings.

The remainder of the day is yours to enjoy before we get together for dinner. (B,D)

Saturday, 31 May: Prague to Vienna via Train, Dinner and Concert

We will depart Prague by train and arrive in Vienna early afternoon.  After transferring to the hotel, you will have some free time before we depart for the Schonbrunn Palace for a tour, dinner and a concert. The Schonbrunn Palace Orchestra performs the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Strauss.  Schönbrunn Palace is one of the most important cultural monuments in Austria. The castle was built to rival French Versailles in Baroque beauty and importance.  (B,D)

Sunday, 1 June: Spanish Riding School, Vienna City Tour
This morning we will enjoy a performance by the world famous Spanish Riding School.  This is a unique opportunity to see classical dressage at the highest level and in its purest form. The precise and graceful maneuvers of the white Lipizzaner stallions and their elegant riders date back to Ancient Greece, and the tradition and skills of the world’s oldest riding school promise to make for an unforgettable experience.

In the afternoon, we will have a tour of the Hofburg Palace, the Treasury, the Imperial Apartments, the Opera and St. Stephans Cathedral.  Vienna is steeped in history and boasts several magnificent buildings.  Hofburg Palace is perhaps the greatest monument to the Hapsburgs and was the seat of one of the largest empires in Europe.  It now houses various museums, chapels, the treasury, national theater, and the Spanish Riding School.  St. Stephan's Cathedral, built in 1147, defines the city center and has been the heart of Vienna for centuries.  We will get together this evening for dinner. (B,D)

Monday, 2 June: Day at Leisure in Vienna

Today is completely at leisure.  There are numerous churches, theaters and museums to explore to learn about the art, music and culture of this wonderful city.  The pulse of the city can be found along Ringstrasse.  Walk around the area and take a break at a sidewalk cafe and have one of the city’s superb pastries.  Innere Stadt (the old city) is where the city’s main attractions are located, and since it is a pedestrian zone, it is also a great place to stroll. Between St. Stephan’s and the State Opera House is Karntnerstrasse, Vienna’s main shopping street. (B)

Tuesday, 3 June: Vienna to Budapest via Hydrofoil

Today we travel by hydrofoil between Vienna and Budapest along the Danube River.  The route takes us past Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.  The "Danube Bend" is famous for its historic towns and is considered the loveliest stretch of the trip.  Here you sail past Esztergom, the nation's most sacred city, and Szentendre, an artist colony, before reaching Budapest. We will have some time to relax before dinner. (B,D)

Wednesday, 4 June: Budapest city tour; Free Time

Enjoy a tour of the city often referred to as the Paris of the east.  Budapest is composed of three cities: Buda, and Obuda on the west side of the river looking over the much larger Pest on the opposite side.  The most famous landmark of Budapest is the Parliament building.  From the Fisherman’s Bastion, enjoy a panoramic view of the city.  We will visit the St. Stephen Basilica, Budapest Central Synagogue and the 13th century Matthias Church and the Hungarian State Opera House.

At the conclusion of the tour, the remainder of the day is free. There are many excellent museums to choose from including the Hungarian National Gallery and Hungarian National Museum.  Experience a thermal spa--Budapest is home to some of the world's finest mineral baths.  Budapest's finest green spot is Margaret Island located in the middle of the River Danube.  And if you want to shop, then stroll along Vaci Utca in Pest,  Budapest's main shopping area lined with boutiques and traditional cafes. (B)

Thursday, 5 June: Royal Palace of Godollo, Farewell Dinner

We will travel to the Royal Palace of Godollo to visit the former summer residence of the emperor Francis Joseph and Queen Elisabeth. It is one of the largest baroque palaces in Hungary.  The palace was the favorite residence of the Queen, affectionately called Sissi by Hungarians.  The Royal suites with original furnishings, the stateroom, exhibitions and a Baroque theatre can be visited and you can take a relaxing walk in the English style Elisabeth Park around the palace.

For our farewell dinner, we will enjoy a dinner cruise along the Danube featuring views of the city’s grand architecture, especially beautiful when illuminated at night.  (B,D)

Friday, 6 June:  Return Home

We depart from Budapest. Schedule your flights at your convenience but no later than 1:00pm.  Transfers will be provided from the hotel to the airport.  (B)
