Wednesday, 25 September - Arrive Venice; City Tour (L)
Arrive Venice no later than 11:30am. Group transfers to the hotel will be provided based on arrival times. The tour begins at 1:00pm at the hotel where we will meet as a group, make introductions all around and have a light lunch. Shortly thereafter we will meet our local guide who will take us around Venice and introduce us to such sights as Piazza San Marco (St. Mark's Square) and the Doges' Palace, a pink marble Gothic masterpiece containing a precious art collection. The remainder of the day is yours to explore Venice. Overnight Venice - 2 nights.
Thursday, 26 September - Free Day in Venice (B,D)
Spend the whole day exploring the museums and sites that interest you most. You might want to float along the canals of Venice in a Gondola or tour the Galleria dell' Accademia. Find time to visit St. Mark's Basilica, one of the greatest buildings in Europe with its exquisite mosaics and detailed carvings. Your tour leader will be available to assist in making the most of your day and will have planned activities for those who want to join her. Later enjoy dinner together.
Friday, 27 September - Train to Florence; Afternoon Walking Tour (B,L)
Say goodbye to Venice this morning and depart by train to the beautiful city of Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance. Today is an opportunity to learn about the art and architecture of Florence during our walking tour of the historical center of Florence, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The remainder of the day is free to shop or to visit more sights in Florence. Overnight Florence - 3 nights.
Saturday, 28 September - Galleria Dell'Accademia, Free Time; Group Dinner (B,D)
In the morning we will visit the Galleria dell’Accademia to admire Michelangelo’s David, a Renaissance masterpiece that became a symbol for the city. The rest of the day is free. Enjoy time at leisure to visit the Uffizi Gallery, the most important art museum in the city, or other cultural sites, or simply relax at a cafe in a lively piazza of this fascinating city. Your tour leader will have planned activities for those who want to join her. This evening we will have dinner together.
Sunday, 29 September - Day trip to the Tuscany Region (B,L)
Today we explore the Tuscany region you have heard so much about! Our day trip begins with the medieval village of San Gimignano, one of the most charming and picturesque of the Tuscan hill towns, known mainly for its medieval towers. The Collegiate church has frescoes of the New and Old Testament dating back to the 14th century. We will continue through the Tuscany countryside, making our last stop in Siena, a perfectly preserved medieval town set among rolling hills with Renaissance villas, old farmhouses, and scenic vineyards. Built on seven hills, this medieval town’s center is lined with narrow cobblestone passages. We will return to Florence for the evening. Overnight Florence.
Monday, 30 September - Train to Naples; Lunch and sightseeing in Naples; Travel to Sorrento (B,L)
Our next destination is Naples. Sit back and enjoy the scenery as we travel three hours by train from Florence to Naples. Upon arrival we will be met by our coach and local guide and go to lunch. Later, enjoy a brief sightseeing tour of Naples by coach before we leave the city to travel to the Amalfi Coast where we will spend the next two nights. Overnight Sorrento - 2 nights.
Tuesday, 1 October – Pompeii and Sights of the Amalfi Coast (B)
Today we visit Pompeii with a local guide. On August 24, 79 AD, the volcano Vesuvius erupted, buried the nearby town of Pompeii in ash and soot and preserved the city in its state from that day. Pompeii is an excavation site and outdoor museum of the ancient Roman settlement. This site is considered to be one of the few sites where an ancient city has been preserved in detail - everything from jars and tables to paintings and people were frozen in time, yielding an unprecedented opportunity to see how the people lived two thousand years ago. After Pompeii we will enjoy a scenic drive back to Sorrento where the afternoon is yours to explore the charming town of Sorrento.
Wednesday, 2 October - Train to Rome; Afternoon City Tour (B,L)
It’s on to Rome! Rome is known as the 'Eternal City' and is the center of one of the globe's greatest civilizations. The Historic Center of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with wonderful palaces, millennium-old churches and basilicas, grand ruins, opulent monuments, ornate statues and graceful fountains. Our short train ride of just over one hour will deliver us into the heart of the city. We’ll check into our hotel, have lunch and then begin our Rome adventure with a city tour of classical Rome highlights--the Roman Forum, the Circus Maximus, the Colosseum, and the Arch of Constantine.
Thursday, 3 October – Morning Vatican City (B)
Vatican City is full of fascinating history and artistic masterpieces. The Vatican is renowned for its impressive artistic masterpieces and architecture, its collections of painting and sculpture, the Sistine Chapel frescoes, and St. Peter's art and architecture. St. Peter’s Basilica’s dome was designed by Michaelangelo and is one of the largest in the world. It houses an ornate cathedral, the tombs of popes since Early Christian times, and galleries of ancient masterpieces, including Michaelangelo's Pieta. After leaving Vatican City the rest of the day is yours to explore.
Friday, 4 October – Free Day in Rome; Farewell Dinner (B,D)
Spend today as you wish. The WTT tour leader will have suggestions to make the most of your final day in Rome. We will get together tonight for our farewell dinner.
Saturday, 5 October – Return home from Rome (B)
Return home at your convenience. Group transfers will be provided based on flight departure times.
