Saturday, 3 August: Arrive London, Afternoon City Tour
Schedule your arrival into London no later than 11:00am. This afternoon we will enjoy an overview tour of London to get oriented to the sights of the city and give everyone a good idea as to what they most want to see while in London. At the conclusion of the tour, the remainder of the day is free time, or return to the hotel and get some rest. Overnight London (2 nights)
Sunday, 4 August: Full Day to Explore London (B)
Today is your day to explore London as you please. Yesterday’s tour gave you some ideas of what you want to do, and the WTT Tour Leader will help pair up travelers with similar interests. The Tour Leader will also have other suggestions to make the most of your time.
Monday, 5 August: Stonehenge, Salisbury and Bath (B,D)
We leave London this morning to visit Stonehenge. With a history dating back over 5,000 years, is one of the most impressive prehistoric megalithic monuments in the world on account of the sheer size of its megaliths, the sophistication of its concentric plan and architectural design and the shaping of the stones with which it was built. In Salisbury, the Salisbury Cathedral spire soars a breathtaking 404 feet into the sky dominating the landscape for many miles around. It is arguably the finest example of the Early English Gothic style of architecture in Britain. We conclude our day in Bath and have dinner at the hotel. Overnight Bath (2 nights)
Tuesday, 6 August: Guided tour of the Roman Baths; Afternoon free (B,D)
Founded by the Romans as a thermal spa, Bath became an important center of the wool industry in the Middle Ages. In the 18th century, under George III, it developed into an elegant town with neoclassical Palladian buildings, which blend harmoniously with the Roman baths. It is known as one of the architecturally finest and most fascinating cities in all of Britain. In 1987, Bath was designated as a World Heritage Site. This morning we enjoy a guided tour of the baths, and the remainder of the day is yours to explore as you wish. We will have dinner at the hotel.
Wednesday, 7 August: Journey to Wales and Cardiff (B,L)
Today we leave Britain and travel to Cardiff in Wales, with a stop for lunch along the way. The Bute family transformed Cardiff Castle from a medieval ruin into the landscaped grounds and kitsch Gothic fantasy you see today. The castle complex is hidden behind high walls which follow the outline of the original Roman camp. It's a collection of buildings arranged around a grassy, peacock-inhabited courtyard, the oldest of which are the 12th-century Norman keep and the 13th-century Black Tower beside the castle entrance. We will check into our hotel this afternoon and the remainder of the day is yours to explore. Overnight Cardiff (2 nights)
Thursday, 8 August: Day tour of Southern Wales (B,D)
Caerphilly, just to the north of Cardiff, features the second largest castle in the country after Windsor Castle, complete with a moat and a leaning tower. The Vale of Glamorgan is perfect for those who love the outdoor life and discovering towns and villages packed full of charm and character. The county’s dramatic coastline, which includes part of the 14-mile Glamorgan Heritage Coast, is a mix of golden sandy beaches, spectacular rugged cliffs, secluded coves and breath-taking views. After a full day we return to Cardiff and go our together for dinner at a local restaurant.
Friday, 9 August: Cardiff to Oxford – Cotswolds – Stratford- upon-Avon (B,D)
Our destination today is the town of Oxford. Upon arrival in Oxford we will enjoy a short walking tour of the city. 'The City of Dreaming Spires' is famous the world over for its University and place in history. For over 800 years, it has been a home to royalty and scholars. For those Harry Potter fans among the group, our guide will point out locations used in the filming of the Harry Potter movies. After lunch, we will depart Oxford for a scenic drive through the Cotswolds arriving in Stratford-upon-Avon. We'll pass through quaint villages with old thatched cottages built in the local stone and where time seems to have stood still for several hundred years. We conclude our day at the hotel and have dinner at the hotel. Overnight Stratford-upon-Avon (2 nights)
Saturday, 10 August: Stratford-upon-Avon; Warwick Castle (B,D)
This morning is spent in one of England's finest castles – Warwick. The castle has been witness to over a thousand years of historical events. As you walk through the castle, you pass the Ghost Tower where the ghost of Sir Fulke Greville is still said to roam, the gloomy torture chamber and dungeon and the 14th century Great Hall with more important relics.
The afternoon is spent in Stratford-upon-Avon where we take a look around the actual house where Shakespeare was born and that of his wife Anne Hathaway. There is also time for you to wander around at leisure so perhaps you would like to shop for souvenirs or take a walk along the river before we meet for dinner together.
Sunday, 11 August: Train to Edinburgh, Scotland (B, L)
To break up a long ride by coach up north, we have chosen to travel by rail from Birmingham to Edinburgh, enjoying the scenery along the way from the comfort of the train. Upon arrival we will be met at the train station and transferred to our hotel. The rest of the afternoon and evening is free. Overnight Edinburgh (3 Nights)
Monday, 12 August: Edinburgh City Tour (B,D)
Today we take a tour of one of the most visited and loved capitals in Europe - Edinburgh. It is essentially Georgian in architecture, but has “borrowed” enough Greek style to gain the title of “Athens of the North”. Famous names such as Robbie Burns, Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson and John Knox have all laid their steps before you as you explore the “Royal Mile” and one of the longest streets in Britain - Princes Street. Included in our trip will be a tour of Edinburgh Castle that dominates the Edinburgh skyline, where you will see the Scottish Crown Jewels, Stone of Destiny, Great Hall, Military Prison and Castle Museums. We will have dinner at a local restaurant.
Tuesday, 13 August: Day to explore Edinburgh (B)
A free day to explore at will. The tour leader will pair up travelers with similar interests and will also offer suggestions to make the most of your day.
Wednesday, 14 August: Stirling; Callander, Rob Roy Center, Fort William (B,D)
Heading northwest, we leave Edinburgh for the Highlands and Fort William via the lovely town of Callander with a stop in Stirling to visit the Stirling Castle. This is Rob Roy country where we take a break to visit the Rob Roy Centre and you can decide for yourself whether this Scottish “Robin Hood” was a hero or villain. After lunch, we continue on to beautiful Loch Awe and Connel where we start winding our way along the banks of shimmering Loch Linnhe to Fort William and check into the hotel. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight Fort William (2 nights)
Thursday, 15 August: Fort William and Glen Nevis Tour; Free Time (B,D)
This morning we take a tour of Fort William and the Glen Nevis area where films such as “Braveheart”, “Rob Roy” and “Highlander” were made. Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles, dominates the landscape of Fort William. We then leave Ft. William behind as we drive through the majestic Glencoe Mountains, where in 1692 the infamous Massacre of the MacDonald’s by the Campbell’s took place, leaving their ghosts to wander through the mists of time, seeking revenge. Return to Ft William and dinner at the hotel.
Friday, 16 August: Drive to Glasgow; Free Time; Farewell Dinner (B,D)
Today we travel from Fort William to Glasgow where we will drive along Scotland’s longest Loch – Loch Lomond. It is the second largest loch of Scotland and probably the most famous after Loch Ness. We will arrive in Glasgow in the early afternoon and check in. The rest of the day is free to explore Glasgow until we gather for dinner together. Overnight Glasgow (1 night)
Saturday, 17 August: Return Home from Glasgow (B)
It's time to return home after a wonderful two weeks. Schedule your return flight home at your convenience. Transfers to the airport are provided based on departure times.
