Our Tall Ship sailing adventure
began with the dramatic departure from St. Maarten. As the
towering sails were raised by crew and passenger alike to the
bagpipe rendition of "Amazing Grace," we knew this week would be
very special.
Sailing the French
West Indies on Tall Ships is 180 degrees different from any
cruise or resort vacation. This small ship has a wonderful,
casual feel that exudes a private-yacht-like atmosphere.
Lasting friendships and camaraderie are quickly developed
between fellow WTT sailors. Every day brought the promise of
new horizons and harbors to explore.
Tall Ship sailing
offers a sea-side window on the world. Some of our WTT group
chose to enjoy themselves by just relaxing and doing nothing –
what a luxury! Others chose from an interesting mix of shore
excursions and water sport activities at each destination.
Not many people
get the opportunity to race on an actual America’s Cup yacht,
but several WTT women did just that! They reported it was one
of the highlights of the trip.
Our stop in St.
Eustatius introduced us to the quiet charm of these Dutch
Windward islands. Many WTT women chose to take a walking tour
of the island while others enjoyed snorkeling on the beach. What
fun it was to snorkel with other women who were discovering the
fun for the first time.
We could choose
from many activities on Nevis; our next stop. Some went on the
Mystery Walk, some took a gardens tour and others relaxed with a
massage on the beach. A special beach cook-out was a high-light
of our evening on one of our favorite islands.
St. Kitts was
our next adventure. The scenic island tour by train was a great
way to enjoy the beauty of this lush island. Of course, several
WTT women enjoyed the beach and water activities, while still
others went hiking.
We felt we were
in the French Rivera when we visited St. Barts. We enjoyed
lunch at beachside restaurants, window-shopped for high fashion
clothes and admired the luxury mega-yachts of the celebrities
that lined the piers for all to gawk at. What a feast for the
eyes!
Upon our return
to St. Maarten, our WTT group took advantage of the great
shopping opportunities. We found bargains on luggage, jewelry,
purses, shoes – the list goes on and on. As we boarded our
flights back home, most of our group agreed – we will return for
another Tall Ship adventure!
